Restoration of 'Aisha Umm Al-Mu'minin School
Sidon, Lebanon

The residence dates from 1730 and was used as a school from 1850; it was abandoned during the mid-20th century and later used for informal emergency housing during the civil war. Restoration began in 1998, and the facility was opened as a leadership academy in 2015. It serves 300 students and contains a large conference hall, a library, nine classrooms, and three offices; the prayer hall and hammam have been restored. The badly deteriorated building was restored using original stone for the walls and timber for the ceilings; concrete and later additions were removed; and paintings and ornamentation were restored using historical documentation. Plumbing, ventilation, and electrical systems were installed, and a contemporary glass skylight now covers the central courtyard.
