Battir Cultural and Natural Heritage Development
Battir, Palestine

Battir, an ancient Palestinian village now on Unesco’s World Heritage List, is located in the West Bank, 6.5 km from Bethlehem. The project includes rehabilitation and revitalisation of built and natural sites, documentation and surveys, training, public education, and promotional and educational materials. One example is the rehabilitation of an historic fresh-water spring in the centre of the village that feeds the irrigation system for the extensive agricultural terraces nearby - restoration of the terraces is another project component, and the main square in which the spring is located was rehabilitated for social, religious, and tourism activities including a weekly market. As well as heritage, the project focuses on economic development of the village and the reduction of unemployment.
