Fazili Educational Complex
Isfahan, Iran

This girls’ conservatory and student research centre marked a turn away from the loyalty to purely linear spatial organisation that had dominated other projects in the 12-year collaboration between architect and client. Situated in an area of historic mausoleums and graveyards, it sets out to be novel and dynamic, matching the latest education methods, while retaining references to traditional Persian architecture. Linearity is applied differently, creating sprightly spaces through logical twists in the plan. Persian-inspired elements include the veranda-like features where the upper building mass is supported by columns, and the use of brick, which is common locally. There are multiple open spaces and yards, not only at ground but also on roofs at various levels.
