Mahieddine Slimane Primary School
Algiers, Algeria

In a new town located southwest of Algiers, the primary school serves 430 students aged from 6 to 12 years. Within strict budgetary and time constraints, twelve classrooms and a multi-purpose room are organised around a courtyard that also serves as a sports and recreation area. To reduce construction time, it is built from poured-in-place concrete using prefabricated formwork pre-installed with electrical and sanitary conduits. The orientation of windows permits natural ventilation; the south façade is kept blank to temper the harsh sunlight. The success of the project led to the construction of thirteen similar schools in Oran and Algiers.
