Théâtre Source Didier Schaub
Douala, Cameroon

Commissioned by the organization doual’art, which seeks to improve urban development through engaging the arts, Theatre Source was the winning submission to their call to design an artwork that addressed the theme "Water in the City." A multifunctional public space, Theatre Source is designed around a well, which serves as a water source for an estimated 1000 families in a poor neighbourhood of this fast-growing metropolis. The topography of the existing landscape served as the inspiration for a theatre, and the project included engineering work to improve hygiene and water flow. In addition to its use for water, the local community maintains the space and uses it for shows, weddings and baptisms.
