Valiasr Mosque
Tehran, Iran

The design of the Valiasr Mosque is a departure from the domed structures with minarets that are common. It dispenses with these stereotypical tall elements to harmonize with its context in the centre of the capital, and instead encloses all the functions of a mosque under a roof in the form of a sloping surface that rises gradually from the ground to the height of the neighbouring City Theatre. The three-dimensional, undulating roof harmonises with the park next door and contains splits along its length that let sunlight and natural ventilation into the interior spaces. The circulation between floors is by means of gently sloping ramps to assist pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
