Yenisehir Municipal Building
Diyarbakir, Türkiye

Yenisehir is a district within the large city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, and the three-storey concrete building is conceived as a community centre which embraces public access to the municipal facilities and officials. The ground floor is conceived as a diagonally-positioned iwan or promenade that extends inwards from the large public entrance plaza; the internal promenade features a shallow pool and provides relief from harsh summer heat and access to a public medical clinic and a community multipurpose hall. A double-height circular meeting hall is located on the upper floor, and the glass walls emphasise the open nature of Turkish democracy. The structure is reinforced concrete, either faced with local marble or left exposed.
