Model School
Pristina, Kosovo

The first embodiment of Kosovo’s new Manual of School Standards & Design - developed in a World Bank-funded state project - the school was designed in a six-month participatory process involving children, teachers and client. Three blocks for pre-primary, primary and lower-secondary levels respectively are connected by a double-storey multipurpose area that serves for circulation and socialising and occasionally for concerts or exhibitions. This and the corridors overlook an inner courtyard, allowing natural light to all spaces. The exterior’s crisp white and warm wood continue inside with added splashes of colour. Solutions for comfort and sustainability include thermal and acoustic insulation, solar panels, rainwater harvesting and biomass heating. A green roof can be used as an open laboratory for natural sciences teaching.
