Hamamyolu Urban Deck
Eskisehir, Türkiye

This 1.2-kilometre-long green pedestrian axis has reinvigorated a declining historic street, boosting trade and providing an all-age leisure area. Extensive public consultation informed its design. A central LED lighting axis - meandering only to avoid pre-existing trees - is set in rough white concrete with colourful embedded glass from traditional local workshops. A range of cafés face towards this, with amphitheatre-style seating up to their roofs at rear and sides. Planting and water features are extensive on rooftops and ground. In front of the old hammam (hence the name) is a steam pool. Playful aspects include inbuilt trampolines and stepping-stone pools. Carrying the axis over the central junction is a covered-bridge-cum-art-gallery. The main material for decking, seating and buildings is recycled wood.
