Bangree Nouma Elementary School
Sabou, Burkina Faso

Four classrooms, an office with medical aid support, sanitary facilities, a courtyard, and an outdoor multifunctional space with kitchen serve 120 children aged 3 to 6 years old. The open circular courtyard is the centre of the project; prefabricated steel beams support a network of steel trusses surrounding the perimeter to form the double-roof that is covered with corrugated metal. Exterior walls of the enclosed spaces are from masonry, with spaced openings to allow for natural ventilation; the façades facing the inner courtyard are filled with operable steel louvres to allow ventilation and natural lighting. The outer walls of the circular compound feature traditional designs and patterns painted by local craftsmen.
