Common Room
Hargeisa, Somalia

Commissioned during Covid to provide a space for social-distancing outside the dilapidated land registry building, the covered outdoor room serves as an entrance area and also as a venue for meetings, seminars, and workshops by municipal authorities, land-registry staff, and visitors. Timber frames are placed on a concrete-block plinth; opaline polycarbonate plastic sheets form the exterior façade and temper strong sunlight, while the two end-walls are left open for natural ventilation. A low concrete wall and shallow concrete steps are located to one side of the common room to provide seating, as well as protection during the rainy season. The sloping roof is covered with corrugated metal.
