Gelora Bung Karno Sport Complex Renovation
Jakarta, Indonesia

To host the 2018 Asian Games, eight stadia constructed in the 1960s were renovated; three new pitches were created; and a new basketball stadium was erected. All of the facilities are located on a large, landscaped site in central Jakarta. The renovations sought to conserve the architectural character of the original Soviet-designed stadia. The entire area was reconceived as a fully public complex, and great effort was devoted to opening the stadia to the surrounding green areas, complemented by a sustainable programme to make full-time use of the facilities, not exclusively for sporting events. Concrete was the principal material for of all renovations, similar to the original structures; steel and concrete block were used for the new areas.
