Econef is a Tanzanian NGO that serves orphan children, and this centre provides dormitories for 25 resident children as well as classrooms for them and other local students. Four buildings contain the schoolrooms, offices, a library, and dormitory living spaces for the resident students; the buildings each contain central courtyards and are linked by a covered outdoor corridor; gardens, recreational areas, and agricultural land form other components. The buildings are constructed of local brick; the upper corrugated-metal roofs are elevated above inner roof structures of timber with thermal insulation, and the interstices between the two roofs are filled with sisal poles to enhance natural ventilation. All of the window openings are louvered to block midday sunshine.
