Environmental Rehabilitation of Wadi al-Aqiq

The valley or Holy Oasis begins some 30 km south of Madinah and runs for 52 kilometres; phase one is the initial part of a much larger programme to rehabilitate the natural environment and comprises promenades and ground works on both sides and banks of a 1.5-km stretch of the wadi. The project addresses flood-risk management, the nurturing of local flora and fauna, environmental protection, and landscape rehabilitation while providing leisure and educational areas for residents, pilgrims, and visitors to the city of Madinah. Paving, lighting, and landscaping have been undertaken.
