The mosque for 1,000 worshippers also serves as a community centre and recreational space for university students and residents of the nearby community. Bioclimatic principals to reduce solar gain and increase natural ventilation were given urgency as redesign and construction took place during the Covid pandemic. To achieve natural ventilation throughout the three-storey building, all of the façade walls are constructed of specially-designed "roster" or open terracotta blocks. The structure is reinforced concrete, with columns supporting the prayer-hall mezzanines and roofs that are conceived as overlapping tiers open to the elements. The uppermost roof, like the sunken courtyard on the ground floor, is planted to further enhance natural climate control.
