Created in 1914, the 17 ha the Botanical Garden of Rabat contains a sample of diverse plant life from around the world. It was the brainchild of Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier but it would not be realized until 1927 with and Gaston Hevert, Horticultural Engineer, as the first director.
The garden was completely rehabilitated between 2013 and 2015, financed by Wilaya de la région de Rabat-Salé-Zemmour-Zaer, Commune urbaine de Rabat, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), and the Fonds Hassan II.
According to the website for the INRA, the agency responsible for the garden, it contains more than 650 ornamental and fruit species originating in local, tropical, subtropical and desert climates. The arboretum contains 44 species representing 27 families.
It serves INRA as a place for research, experimentation and environmental education. There is also an Arab-Andalusian villa that serves as a permanent museum highlighting the theme of water and light.
The garden is open to the public and generally accessible even to those with disabilities, as it has ramps between the various levels of the garden.
