COF Outreach Village Schools
Various Locations, Uganda

The Cotton On Foundation’s Outreach Village School programme, which is in the process of creating a total of 20,000 new educational places, consists of the construction of primary schools in remote villages in the two districts of Uganda. Each school accommodates 500 students and ten teachers, the latter residing on site. A typical classroom block contains four classrooms of approximately 50 sq2 with other blocks containing both classrooms, a staff room and the administration offices. All sites are designed around the concept of creating small courtyards between buildings that create different spaces for children to learn and play. The incorporation of an amphitheatre in each school is also very important. Toilets are placed in separate buildings and connected to a bio-digester. The resulting biogas is used for firewood-free cooking. All schools are fitted with a centralised rainwater harvesting system and photovoltaic panels.
