Hanna Boutique Hotel
Tehran, Iran

The first component of an ongoing demonstration project to regenerate older neighbourhoods in Tehran, a 1930s residence was restored as a seven-room hotel, restaurant, gallery, café, and shop; new areas were created on the roof for a meeting room, and in the parking area for a pop-up crafts store. The existing structure was retained and restored but reinforced with concrete-and-steel foundations to meet seismic requirements, and a steel diaphragm was welded into the ground and upper floors. Once these reinforcements were in place, the restoration employed the original structure and materials, and older artisans trained younger craftsmen in traditional materials and techniques.
