Campus Startup Lions
Turkana, Kenya

An educational and entrepreneurial hub on the shores of Lake Turkana, the project serves as a catalyst for local youth empowerment by providing a space for technology-driven education, business incubation and community engagement. The campus houses classrooms, collaborative workspaces and computer labs. A central feature is the business incubation centre, designed to nurture and support startups. There are also residential facilities for students and staff, along with communal areas such as dining halls, recreational spaces, rooftop terraces and courtyards. The design of the campus responds to the natural landscape, and its towers are inspired by local termite mounds. The primary material is local volcanic stone, selected for its availability, proximity, durability, thermal mass and connection to the vernacular architecture. This keeps interior spaces cool in the hot climate and reduces the need for artificial ventilation. Woven straw shades, produced on site by the local community, are integrated into the window frames to shield the interior from direct sunlight. The design integrates natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting and solar energy, ensuring minimal environmental impact and promoting resilience in the region’s arid climate.
