Brusa Bezistan
Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

"This monumental building was built in 1551 by Rustem Pasha, the Grand Vizier of Suleiman the Magnificent. The facility was used to sell silk that the founder himself produced in Bursa.
Brusa Bezistan has a rectangular base (29.5 x 20.5 m), was built of stone and covered with six domes and two smaller domes. The massive columns inside the bezistan have a constructive role, above which there are domes that were used to store archival documents and sigils. During the siege of Sarajevo in 1992-95. Brusa Bezistan was damaged so much that after extensive rehabilitation works, the permanent exhibition of the Museum of Sarajevo is located there today, which makes further survival possible for this object of high cultural heritage value. From a conceptual point of view, this permanent exhibition is based on the chronological principle and the exhibition of archaeological material is divided into three basic parts: prehistory, antiquity (the older motif of lilies in BiH is exhibited here) and the Middle Ages. Exhibits from the Ottoman period (the most expensive equipment of an Ottoman warrior on display) and the time of the Austro-Hungarian administration in Sarajevo are on display at the Bezistan Gallery.”
