Well in Tughluqabad Fort (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)
New Delhi, India

1959-62 Survey

Called the Well of Tughluqābād Fort. Located close to the south wall of the fort's royal area. Grid ref. J-13

This well has mostly collapsed, leaving only a part of the stonework on the north side and a pumping facility, but it probably was a cubical shape originally, and quite large. The ruins of an even larger well are in the eastern part of the royal area; both wells were probably constructed for the purpose of storing spring water and rainwater. Period II.

2015-18 Survey

This has been repaired and exists today. The stairwell is different from Shokoohy’s reconstruction; the steps descend from north to south on the east side of the rectangular block, take a right turn, and then descend from east to west on the south side to reach the bottom. The level of the tank gets lower over four levels; it is thought to have been restored this way because the excavation exposed the east stonework of the rectangular block’s southeast section. The walls of the tank are covered in layers of large, rectangular cut stone.

W15 is a water tank inside a fort, and according to Shokoohy, it measured 18m (north-south) by 20m (east-west), and was 16m deep. On the east side, large steps led down to the water surface. Corbels projected from the north bank where there was a pumping facility. Though this is not written in Delhi, Shokoohy theorizes that there was a round well for drinking water to the northwest of the tank.

In Delhi, the water reservoir inside the citadel (mentioned in the description of W15) was also rectangular in shape; much of the stonework on the east side remained, but the rest had fallen and was not repaired.

1959-62 Survey: The well is now largely collapsed, with only remnants of the original stonework surviving on the northern side alongside a modern pumping facility. Based on the surviving base and layout, it was likely cubical in form and of considerable size.
2015-18 Survey: The structure has undergone repairs and remains extant today.
