Buli Bhatiyari ka Mahal (Mission for Indian History and Archaeology)
New Delhi, India

1959-62 Survey

Called Būlī Bhatiyārī kā Maḥal. Located approximately 300 m south-southeast from the intersection of Upper Ridge Road and Pūsā Road, almost adjoining the south edge of a modern reservoir. Grid ref. G-6

This is a small fort-like structure adjoining a dam that runs in the north-south direction; its plan is shaped like a fan spreading out from its southeast corner. There are high walls with bastions remaining in parts of the east and south sides. There is a double gate in the northeast corner that leads to an inner courtyard, whose east side is lined with small rooms. Traces of buildings can be seen on the west side and in the southwest corner that is one level higher. Remarkably, there are sewage facilities remaining in one corner of the south side. Period II.

2015-18 Survey

This structure has been abandoned, but there is a signboard of the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation outside the north gate, so it appears that at one point there was some attempt at preservation.

(Paragraph 2nd from the 2015-18 Survey are translated using DeepL.com]

[According to Monuments of Delhi, the building was 45m north-south by 43m east-west, with the most important part of the building on a semi-circular platform in the west (2m high) and a depth of 21m. The interior of the enclosure was divided into a higher semi-circular section and a rectangular section resembling a courtyard, the southern part of the rectangle being 5m longer than the northern part, with several small chambers on the eastern and southern sides. In the north-eastern corner of the overall enclosure there is an almost square section bordering the eastern side of the rectangle, with an outer northern entrance and a western entrance to the courtyard. A circular borge projects from the south-eastern corner of the overall enclosure; the location on Delhi Ridge suggests that, like O12 and O13, the building was associated with hunting and feasting, but it is unique in having a large rectangular enclosed garden.

The palace is believed to have originally functioned as a shikargah (hunting lodge), constructed by Sultan Firoz Shah Tughlaq around 1354 CE, alongside the adjoining bund (embankment). This reflects a broader pattern during his reign, wherein several bunds were built in and around Delhi, often accompanied by such royal lodges.
2015-18 Survey: Although the structure is currently abandoned, a signboard installed by the Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation outside the north gate indicates that preservation efforts were initiated at some point in the past.
