al-Alam Palace
Muscat, Oman

Al-Alam Palace or Qasr al-Alam is the ceremonial palace of the Sultan of Oman in Old Muscat. The present-day palace was constructed in 1975 at the behest of Sultan Qaboos bin Said and sits on the previous site of Bayt al-‘Alam (early 1800s-early 1970s) along the sea wall which extends between Fort Mirani and Fort Jalali. The palace was designed by Shapoorji Pallonji. It is easily identifiable for its gold and blue columns, tapered at the bottom and supporting a flat square roof, set against the nearby white government buildings.
