Montreal is the perhaps surprising setting for what 'may well be the largest Middle Eastern grocery market in the world'. The new Adonis market in Dollard-des-Ormeaux is part of a small chain that, in contrast to the supermarket giants, attempts to give each of its outlets a distinctive character. Its architecture is modernist, recreating the atmosphere of a traditional open-air market with abundant fenestration and a canted roof that appears to float above the voluminous space of the interior. The exterior is clad in painted steel siding, terracotta tiles and brick, while the roof is colour PVC membrane.
