For a client with a low budget who wanted a home that might be dismantled, the architect proposed a house of steel - possibly the first residential steel-frame structure in southern India. It is an experiment in using Western materials to create a prototype that shows how metal can be used for residential purposes and cope with the climate of the tropics. The project brought together a diverse group of people - an Estonian engineer, a French roofer and Tamil workers trained in traditional bricks and mortar - who worked collaboratively with minimal equipment for lifting or transport, building with elements produced at Auroville’s steel workshop.
