Gorgan Martyrs Memorial
Gurgan, Iran
The memorial project commemorates eight martyrs of the Iran-Iraq war. The design aims to create an ‘empty space’ evoking the martyrs and has been designed by regional architects. The exposed concrete structure takes the form of two 16-metre-high folded walls facing one another, with tombs located in between. This concept has been inspired by ‘iwans’ featured in mosques. Rising from a plinth, the walls are separated by a gap giving access to the centre of the space. Turkmen pergolas and carpet design have inspired rhombus-shaped openings within the walls. Stone grilles designed with holy patterns within openings provide ventilation.
