Improved Traditional Technology Schools
Tāluqān, Afghanistan
Prototypes for low-cost schools that can be built and maintained by locals, these structures are based on traditional construction methods but with modern improvements. Both designs - one single-bay with two classrooms, one two-bay with six classrooms - can be easily scaled up. Built of sun-dried bricks with mud mortar, they could equally be executed in rammed earth or mud-mortar rubble masonry. A sill-high stone plinth protects from rain and snow. Climatic comfort is achieved through the traditional south orientation of large windows, the thick walls, and the ventilated roof space above the ceilings. Shear walls, concrete bands and vertical corner bars aid earthquake resistance.
