The Cities of Southern Sogd in Eighth–Twelfth Centuries
Города Южного Согда в VIII – ХII вв
This research focuses on the urbanisation process of Southern Sogd in the mediaeval period. It observes the typology of cities and urban settlements in the region, and their development. For the first time, the valley of Kashka-Darya is studied through the stratigraphy of mediaeval monuments, and the remains of craftsmanship industries.
In the introduction the relevance and importance of the study of medieval cities’ history and the urbanisation process is explained. The sources of the current research and the materials of archaeological excavations conducted by the Kashka-Darya archaeological topographic expedition are provided.
The book begins by presenting the geographical conditions of the oasis of Kashka-Darya, before reviewing the written sources on the geography of the cities and settlements of the region between the eighth and twelfth centuries.
Thereafter, the book focuses on the stratigraphy of the cities and settlements. It looks at the medieval economy, living environment and spiritual culture of the Kashka-Darya oasis. The topography, the construction of the buildings, the water supply and sewage system are discussed and the archaeological findings presented.
At the end of the book there is an attachment consisting of thirty two pictures along with a mediaeval map of the Valley of Kashka-Darya, as well as plans and maps of the urban and rural settlements.
