Rehabilitation of Four Caranvanserais
Fez, Morocco

Four caravanserais dating from the 14th-18th centuries were in different states of repair: one required rehabilitation, one was restored, and two others, destroyed by fire, were rebuilt. All of them originally served guilds of craftsmen and artisans, and these functions were maintained even as new activities - a women’s centre, crafts training workshop, and studios for artists and craftsmen - were introduced; emphasis was given to contemporary uses for historic buildings. Only traditional materials and techniques were employed in all four projects, and surveys of and training in these techniques were important components of the overall programme, as was cooperation with various government ministries to secure approval for this new approach to urban and architectural heritage in Morocco.
